If this Iraqi is right about the significance of the elections, then it seems to me that Bush's invasion of Iraq has, surprisingly, been a brilliant move because it has offered Iraqis a democratic future that, through this election, has now become clear to the world, and in particular to the Arab world, even as it has forced the Baathists and al-Qaeda into an alliance of autocratic forces that use terrorism to kill civilians but all the while losing convincingly to coalition forces. I hope that he's right.
