Nothing Ain't Worth Nothin' But It's Free

Dr. Keith Burgess-Jackson attributes the line "nothing left to lose" to Janis Joplin. Although she sang it, she didn't write it. The honor (?) goes to Kris Kristofferson, erstwhile student in the late '50s at Pomona College, Claremont, California where he took at least one philosophy course from Frederick Sontag, as I heard from the latter when he gave a lecture at Loyola University of Los Angeles in 1970 or '71. Sontag was trying to show the relevance of philosophy -- in those days when 'relevance' was a buzzword -- by mentioning the influence he had had on Kristofferson.

The line is from the song "Me and Bobby McGee."
